Guideline

This guideline is not a do all or nothing guideline, but the more of the things stated here you'll do, the better your program can be used as Prior Art.

Basic Rules

  1. Release Early, Release Often (The Cathedral and the Bazaar)
  2. Use public mailing-lists that provide full mbox-download of the complete list-archive
  3. Post to Usenet-Discussions
  4. Use public Version Control Systems (as CVS on http://sourceforge.net)
  5. Make regular Backups of your work
  6. Try to get your software mirrored on several servers (as it is done for releases on sourceforge.net automatically)
  7. Software Release Practice HOWTO by Eric Steven Raymond

Additional work

  1. Create legal timestamps on each new release (as you can freely do on e.g. prevalent.de)
