Nicholas Petreley, until recently a skeptic of the LSB, shares his views on what he finds encouraging about recent developments in the Free Standards Group, the LSB 1.0 specification and the vendors who support it in this September 2001 Computerworld article :
This is where I get to the good news. After years of delays, LSB has finally produced a 1.0 specification. LSB is also making great strides with internationalization standards. The potential for a global customer base really sweetens the pot for ISVs…I am impressed by the enthusiastic support by the likes of HP, IBM and Sun to keep things moving.
Petreley offers an interesting analysis of the concept of “standards” in the worlds of Windows, Unix and Linux, and urges the LSB project and its supporters to “start thinking more like Microsoft” with this admonition: “Suck it up, guys.”
