Mobile Linux (MLI)

About Mobile Linux (MLI)

The Mobile Linux workgroup has as its mission to accelerate adoption of Linux on next-generation mobile handsets and other converged voice/data portable devices and to provide a mobile profile for the LSB.

mli_promotion

Linux in mobile does not need a lot of evangelism. Linux already has traction in mobile space and the adoption of Linux on next-generation mobile handsets and other converged voice/data portable devices is accelerating. End users of these mobile devices may never know that they are running "Linux Inside", but the promotion of Linux-based handsets will attract developers into the mobile Linux ecosystem. An open development environment will enable developers to provide applications and add-ons to the ecosystem that were not possible on proprietary platforms.

mli_standards

The Mobile Linux workgroup is the natural forum for communication between members and the LSB workgroup, fostering adaptation of the LSB and its test suite to the mobile Linux development environment and assisting members in using the LSB effectively.

mli_legal

While the technical barriers to sue of Linux in mobile devices have largely been overcome, device manufacturers still have concerns about the legal issues around use of GPL software in their products. The legal team at The Linux Foundation could provide a forum to discuss legal concerns among the members. Example topics include GPLv3 and the ability to change/update handsets, regulatory issues (i.e. FCC regs), DRM, and other IP liability concerns.

charter

The Mobile Linux workgroup is rechartering to better leverage member participation and to concentrate on areas where we can make a difference. The workgroup's mission is still to accelerate adoption of Linux on next-generation mobile handsets and other converged voice/data portable devices.
