Welcome to the September 2026 edition of the Linux Foundation Newsletter

The open agentic AI community is coming together in San Jose for AGNTCon + MCPCon North America, October 22–23. More than 3,500 developers, researchers, maintainers and technical leaders will gather for 150 sessions across 11 tracks focused on MCP, agent infrastructure, security, interoperability and production agent systems. Register by October 8 to save.

Beyond the event, six developments stand out this month. The Agentic AI Foundation welcomed the Gates Foundation as its first philanthropic member, bringing the perspectives of underserved communities into the development of agentic AI and supporting broader participation in the first MCP Dev Summit Nairobi. The Linux Foundation welcomed TRACE, an open specification developed with AMD, Anthropic, Intel, Microsoft, NVIDIA, OPAQUE and TII to provide portable, verifiable runtime and compliance evidence for AI agents and confidential workloads. The Xen Project launched the Xen Safety Committee to develop shared engineering artifacts for functional safety certification and extended security coverage for Xen releases to five years. OpenSearch won the Analytics & Data Intelligence Solutions category in SiliconANGLE’s 2026 TechForward Awards as the project celebrates five years of community growth. New LF Energy research found that open source software can deliver two to five times greater net value for grid operators and introduced a standardized framework for evaluating those investments. LF Energy also welcomed three new members and three new projects, advanced Power Grid Model to Early Adoption after more than 10 million downloads, and documented how TenneT achieved a tenfold improvement in grid security analysis performance with PowSyBl.

LF Europe: Community Updates

 

Save the date on 6 October because the full conference schedule for The Linux Foundation Member European Forum is now live, and it's shaping up to be one of the year's most important gatherings for open source leaders in Europe.

Taking place in Prague, Czechia, the Forum brings together business and technical leaders from across the Linux Foundation's member community for a single, focused day of conversation on the issues shaping Europe's open source future, chief among them, digital sovereignty.

The Forum is an invitation-only gathering for Linux Foundation member organizations, designed to be small and focused enough for the kind of candid, high-level conversation that a larger conference can't always deliver.   • Linux Foundation Announces Key Industry Support for Linux Vendor Firmware Service | The Linux Foundation announced that Dell Technologies, HP Inc., Lenovo and NVIDIA have joined the Linux Vendor Firmware Service (LVFS) as Premier Members, strengthening vendor-neutral infrastructure for secure firmware updates across the Linux ecosystem. Their support will help enable standardized, automated firmware and microcode updates across enterprise fleets, AI clusters, GPUs and other Linux systems, improving security, reliability and long-term sustainability.   • Envoy AI Gateway becomes Agent Router and joins AAIF: Envoy AI Gateway has joined AAIF as its sixth hosted project and taken the name Agent Router. The code, maintainers, and APIs stay the same. Agent Router gives application teams one API for connecting to models and MCP tools, while platform teams keep credentials, routing, and usage limits in one place. Read the announcement >>
  • MCP usage surged this summer: MCP tool calls from ChatGPT users reached 98 times their January level by August, and Resend passed a million monthly tool calls. The credit goes largely to the July release of the MCP specification, which made the protocol stateless so any available server can handle the next request.   • AAIF adds a Sandbox phase for early-stage projects: AAIF's Governing Board and Technical Committee approved a new Sandbox phase, below Growth, for projects that already work and are gaining community interest but are not yet used widely enough in production to qualify for Growth. A Sandbox project gets a neutral home and standard infrastructure, along with a six-month checkpoint and a twelve-month deadline to apply for Growth. Read the blog >>
  • A2A joins AAIF: Agent2Agent (A2A), the open standard that lets agents discover each other, delegate tasks, and exchange work across frameworks and vendors, is now a hosted project at AAIF. A2A is backed by more than 150 organizations and runs in production across supply chain, financial services, and mobile platforms, including Huawei's HarmonyOS, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, and AWS Bedrock.   • AGL Advances Software-Defined Vehicles at COSCUP 2026
    The Automotive Grade Linux Japan team hosted a dedicated "Software Defined Vehicle Accelerated by Open Source" track at COSCUP 2026 in Taipei. Seven speakers detailed key technical advances around SoDeV—AGL's hypervisor-based reference platform for SDVs—focusing on hardware virtualization with Xen, Zephyr RTOS driver domains, and Yocto-based build reproducibility. Highlights included live demos of SoDeV running on Raspberry Pi 5 and Flutter IVI on RISC-V, illustrating the platform's cross-architecture portability and production readiness.

CHIPS Alliance

  • CHIPS Alliance's open source I3C Core has been expanded with Host Controller support, implemented by Antmicro. The new capabilities enable the Core to manage I3C peripheral networks, including dynamic addressing, in-band interrupts, and higher-speed communication, and have been verified through simulation and FPGA hardware testing. The work strengthens the open-source IP portfolio and lays the groundwork for broader integration with platforms such as Zephyr and Linux.

  • CHIPS Alliance projects Caliptra and VeeR will be featured across a range of sessions at the 2026 OCP Global Summit, highlighting advances in open hardware security, silicon roots of trust, device identity, secure key distribution, verification, manageability, and attestation. Speakers from CHIPS Alliance member organizations including AMD, Google, Intel, Marvell, Microsoft, and NVIDIA will share the latest developments and industry collaboration around open, secure infrastructure.   • The Open Source EDA Birds-of-a-Feather session at DAC 2026 brought together more than 120 researchers, industry practitioners, and open-source developers to explore the intersection of AI, open-source hardware, and EDA. The session highlighted advances in open-source EDA infrastructure, AI-assisted design, benchmarking, PDK development, and workforce development, with CHIPS Alliance contributing to the discussion on the growing open-source ecosystem. Decentralized Identity Foundation (DIF)

  • The DIDcomm Working Group is considering working on a proposal to have DIDcomm as an add-on to MLS in IETF. If you’re interested in working on this, get in touch. Read the survey results here
  • Significant progress has been made on the DIF instance of the Universal Resolver, with GoPlausible.com donating an edge-worker form-factor of the resolver called thisdid.com that runs very price- and compute-efficiently on modern clouds for most known DID methods. We've got our third and fourth DIF-Recommended DID Method. Did:cid is an heir to the DIF-incubated Sidetree methods, and did:ethr is approved as one of the most well-established blockchain-based methods.
  • Release of the HatPro draft by the Hospitality and Travel Group. The executive summary, overview, and implementation guide (updated for the current version) are available on the Hospitality and Travel WG Website.
  • Approval of CAWG Specifications version 1.3.

eBPF Foundation

  • eBPF Foundation Grants $100,000 to Advance Developer Tools and Security
    The eBPF Foundation has awarded $100,000 in academic research grants to teams at Virginia Tech and the University of British Columbia. The $50,000 unrestricted grants will support open-source projects focused on automated eBPF verifier error diagnostics and secure, remote virtual machine observability in cloud environments. These initiatives aim to lower developer barriers, improve upstream safety, and deliver actionable toolchains to the broader eBPF community.

  • Google Enhances Infrastructure Performance Using Custom eBPF Schedulers
    Google has successfully deployed application-tailored CPU scheduling policies using eBPF frameworks like sched_ext to overcome general-purpose kernel constraints. The architecture delivered a 5% improvement in queries per second for core RPC serving stacks alongside double-digit throughput gains for memory-intensive workloads.   • LF Research and FINOS Publish Report on AI and Open Source in Finance
    Following a successful AI and Open Source in Finance leadership Summit, Linux Foundation Research and the FINOS AI Fund have released a joint report synthesizing insights from industry executives, regulators, and security experts. The study highlights an urgent 18-to-24-month window to automate software vulnerability remediation. It also provides frameworks for AI cost governance ("tokenomics"), agentic workflow management, and collaborative initiatives like OSERA and Akrites examining AI integration, supply chain security, and open standards in regulated environments.

  • OSERA: Bringing open source supply chain remediations in production at scale
    As part of the collective Linux Foundation response to AI-enabled cyber threats, FINOS launched OSERA, the Open Source Enterprise Resiliency Alliance, to enable enterprises to harden the open source they depend on and bring it up to production at scale. The initiative is highly complementary to Akrites: while Akrites serves as the upstream engine, offering a centralized Security Incident Response Team (SIRT) and coordinated disclosure process to support maintainers of the commons we all depend on, OSERA focuses on downstream consumption providing financial institutions - and any enterprise - with a platform to prioritize, produce, and frictionlessly route in their production environment under predictable SLAs and with standardized bank-grade attestations.

  • konspekt Contributed to FINOS Labs for Portable AI Decision Records
    FINOS has accepted konspekt into FINOS Labs as a proposed open standard for capturing human-readable, portable decision records across generative AI development workflows. Contributed by Denis Urusov, konspekt provides a vendor-neutral format for tracking project decisions, open questions, architectural artifacts, and code provenance. The initiative enables engineering teams to maintain auditable, transparent governance trails as AI-assisted software development becomes widespread.

  • FINOS Releases Common Domain Model (CDM) 7.0
    FINOS has released CDM 7, a major production update consolidating over 130 enhancements across financial product modeling, legal agreements, and transaction lifecycles. Underpinned by Rune DSL 10, the release completes functional ingestion mappings, introduces a Smart Contracts Framework, and adds native Python distribution via PyPI. These capabilities lower integration barriers, allowing developers to incorporate standardized data structures directly into enterprise workflows.

  • Podcast: Open Data vs. Open Source in AI Workflows
    In a recent podcast episode, Amy Rose, CTO of the Overture Maps Foundation, joins FINOS to discuss the architectural differences between open-source software and open data models. The discussion covers how Overture builds interoperable global map layers and resolves complex entity definitions across massive datasets. The episode also highlights why modern agentic AI systems require detailed record-level metadata rather than high-level summaries.

Green Software Foundation

  • GSF Launches Software Water Intensity (SWI) Specification: Software feels weightless, but it isn't — every API call, video stream, and AI query runs on physical infrastructure with a real water footprint, from data centre cooling to electricity generation to chip manufacturing. The Green Software Foundation is developing a new standard to change that. Modelled on the proven SCI approach — an ISO/IEC 21031:2024-accredited methodology already used industry-wide to measure carbon — SWI will give software teams a consistent, comparable way to measure, report, and reduce their water impact, and the Standards Working Group is shaping the open questions now, so get involved while the standard is still being written. 

High Performance Software Foundation (HPSF)

  • Save the date for HPSF Conference 2027 from April 12-16, 2027 in Montreal, Canada. The HPSFCon call for proposals (CFP) opens on September 15th.

As AI, accelerated computing, and cloud-based HPC reshape the landscape, more organizations than ever have a stake in the software that powers it.     Qualcomm’s PMIC software team adopted Zephyr to unify its pre-silicon and production firmware development workflows around a shared application codebase. Zephyr’s Devicetree, Kconfig, west, Twister, and Pytest enabled the team to support different hardware platforms and automate hardware-in-the-loop testing through GitHub Actions.
