‘A World Without Linux’ illustrates ubiquity of Linux and gives thanks to thousands of open source developers
SAN FRANCISCO – December 18, 2015 – The Linux Foundation, the nonprofit organization enabling mass innovation through open source, today released the final episode of its digital video series, “A World Without Linux,” an animated web series that brings awareness to the role that Linux plays in society and gives thanks to the worldwide community of contributors and supporters. The final episode is titled “Free Burger” and features Linux creator Linus Torvalds: https://youtu.be/CE4WeUNFX2g. The series was originally launched on October 5, 2015 at LinuxCon Europe.
Each episode illustrates a fictitious world in which Linux doesn’t exist to make a bold and fun statement about Linux's role in our everyday lives. While technology innovations like the Internet, Twitter or space exploration may exist without LInux, this video series underscores how the operating system has accelerated modern day technologies. Through this storytelling technique, the story of Linux can reach more people around the world and bring attention to the developers and companies who support it.
“Linux is the most well-known example of how open source and collaborative development can impact the world,” said Jennifer Cloer, vice president of communications, The Linux Foundation. “We hope the ‘World Without Linux’ video series helps extend the story of Linux to more people around the world and highlights how shared technology investments can result in providing the base infrastructure for conducting business and living our lives.”
Linux is the world’s largest collaborative project in the history of computing. It runs most of the world’s technology infrastructure and is supported by more developers and companies than any other platform. It’s literally everywhere - from phones to cars, the office, the home and more. It also powers the Internet, the cloud, the world’s stock exchanges, supercomputers, embedded devices and more.
The series follows characters Annie, Sam and String as they navigate music, social connections, movies, road trips and even space explorations in the imaginary world without Linux.
