AWS Becomes a Platinum Member of the Linux Foundation, Deepening Commitment to Open Source

Platinum membership builds on more than a decade of AWS investment across cloud native, security, AI and critical open source infrastructure at the Linux Foundation

Summary:

• Amazon Web Services (AWS) has become a Platinum Member of the Linux Foundation, the organization's highest level of membership.
• The expanded commitment deepens AWS’ commitment to open source and builds on over a decade of investment in the technologies and communities powering modern infrastructure.
• As a Platinum Member, AWS will have representation on the Linux Foundation Board of Directors and will continue its work across the Foundation’s global project ecosystem.

SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 7, 2026 – The Linux Foundation, the nonprofit organization enabling mass innovation through open source, today announced that Amazon Web Services (AWS) has become a Platinum Member of the foundation, its highest level of membership. The expanded commitment builds on more than a decade of AWS participation across the Linux Foundation ecosystem and strengthens its role in supporting the open source technologies and communities powering modern infrastructure.

AWS has contributed technology, engineering resources and funding across a broad range of Linux Foundation projects and communities. In 2024, AWS transferred OpenSearch, an open source search and analytics suite, forming the OpenSearch Software Foundation, where it continues as a Premier Member. AWS is also a founding member of the Akrites initiative and the Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF).

“Open source is fundamental to the infrastructure that powers the global technology economy, and sustaining it requires long-term investment from the companies that build on and contribute to it,” said Jim Zemlin, CEO, Linux Foundation. “We’re pleased to welcome AWS as a Platinum Member and expand our work together across the open source ecosystem.”

Today, AWS holds an active membership to 25 projects and foundations across the Linux Foundation including its own contributed projects. AWS is a Platinum Member of the Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF), the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF), PyTorch Foundation and the Yocto Project. They are a premier member of the Academy Software Foundation (ASWF), Alpha-Omega Foundation, FinOps Foundation, Jupyter Foundation, OpenSearch Software Foundation, Open Source Security Foundation (OpenSSF), Post-Quantum Cryptography Alliance, Valkey and the x402 Foundation.

"Open source is where our industry solves its hardest problems together and the Linux Foundation stewards projects that define modern computing at global scale, from Kubernetes and PyTorch to MCP, OpenSearch, and Valkey,” said Stormy Peters, Head of Open Source at Amazon Web Services. “When we build infrastructure that solves a problem beyond AWS, we look for a neutral home to help sustain it. Becoming a Platinum Member reflects our long-term investment in keeping these ecosystems healthy and innovating in the open."

As a Platinum Member, AWS will have representation on the Linux Foundation Board of Directors and will continue its work across the Foundation’s global project ecosystem to support the development and long-term sustainability of critical open source technologies.
