LF Networking and OpenAirInterface Software Alliance (OSA) collaborate to announce Duranta to advance Open Source RAN Innovation
- New Duranta project, built off OpenAirInterface (OAI) community software to strengthen Open RAN ecosystems with neutral governance, structured support, and expanded collaboration between research and global communities
- Open end-to-end Networking stack now includes critical component in the deployment of Open Source RAN, including CU/DU
- Duranta builds on the prior 5G Superblueprint integration with Nephio and CNF automation.
AMSTERDAM—Open Source Summit EU —27 August, 2025 — LF Networking, the facilitator of collaboration and operational excellence across open source networking projects and the OpenAirInterface Software Alliance (OSA), today announced that OpenAirInterface (OAI) is collaborating with LF Networking to establish a new candidate project called Duranta. This effort will accelerate the development and deployment of open source Radio Access Network (RAN) technologies, furthering LFN’s mission to serve as the global collaboration hub for open networking innovation.
Duranta brings together OAI’s deep roots in academic research and hands-on development of Open RAN software with LF Networking’s proven model of neutral global governance, structured support, and industry-scale collaboration. As part of LF Networking, Duranta will benefit from LFN’s governance framework including a dedicated Governing Board, and industry-grade security processes — all designed to help open source projects thrive at scale for industry use cases.
“OpenAirInterface has been a partner of Open RAN research and innovation,” said Arpit Joshipura, General Manager, Networking, Edge & IoT at the Linux Foundation. “By joining LF Networking, Duranta will expand its impact with increased industry engagement, and the opportunity to connect research-focused communities to a global open source networking ecosystem.”
Duranta will complement LF Networking’s existing portfolio of open source networking projects, particularly in the deployment and automation components, creating new opportunities for end-to-end integration and testing. OAI will bring its unique set of organizational capabilities of radio CICD that are specific to cellular networks and which complement LF Networking’s existing shared testing labs, infrastructure, and comprehensive ecosystem. Through this combination Duranta will thus provide a robust platform for telecom operators, vendors, system integrators, and researchers to collaborate on next-generation RAN solutions, including CU/DU components.
“By supporting the creation of Duranta and seeding it with key cellular networking assets, OSA is stepping forward to support the long standing 5G Superblueprint ambitions of LFN,” said Raymond Knopp, President of OSA. “With OAI software assets provided through Duranta, the community, particularly the industrial players, now has access to a full cellular framework including integration with LFN’s Nephio for CNF deployment and automation. We call upon the LFN members to join the efforts to strengthen the relationship with OSA by supporting its RAN stack development and radio CICD lab, a unique set of expertise developed and grown over two decades. Such commitment from LFN members will further ensure the much-needed industry alignment in Duranta and will enable delivery of mature, deployment-grade open RAN solutions, while keeping the academic and research collaborations, that have been OAI’s hallmark, strongly engaged for evolution of the CU/DU stack towards 6G.”
