    2023 Open Source Gen AI

    With the explosion in generative AI, the Linux Foundation wanted to understand how the technology is being adopted at an organization level and the benefits and challenges of an open source solution in comparison to closed source. LF Research and LF AI & Data fielded a survey to sample individuals on their familiarity with their organization’s adoption of generative AI. We found that generative AI is becoming a key component of current and future business for our respondents, with many preferring open over proprietary AI for its ease of integration and transparency.     The security of open source software is so often a primary concern in this community, and maintainers play a crucial role in this endeavor by securing the health and sustainability of open source software. As we look to build out tooling and practices that increase software security, how do we make sure that these tools empower maintainers, and not add additional burden?     • The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences recognized members of the Technical Steering Committee for OpenVDB, an ASWF project, with Scientific and Technical Awards for the continued evolution and expansion of the feature set of OpenVDB. Read about this here.

    • Learn how LF Energy’s Real Time Data Ingestion Platform (RTDIP) is moving beyond the traditional data historian, providing new options to cater requirements for real time data ingestion.

    • The 4th Power Grid Model Meet-up took place on December 7, 2023. The meet-up was hosted by Enexis in Den Bosch. Enexis is one of the three large Dutch distribution system operators (DSO). Read our recap.

    • OperatorFabric Release v. 4.1.0 is now available, with improvements to the user interface and new features such as the addition of a process monitoring screen and a health check endpoint for node services.

    • FlexMeasures has released v0.18, with better use of future knowledge to improve power optimization.

    • A new video explores how open source can help with how we consume and produce electricity.

    • This additional new video explains how LF Energy is bringing different players together to combat the energy crisis.

    LF Networking

    • In conjunction with CNCF, and as part of the new, aligned Cloud Native Network Function (CNF) initiative announced late last year, a new white paper, “Accelerating Cloud Native in Teclo,” is now available. Read the summary blog post and download the white paper today to get the CSP perspective on telco cloud transformation.  

    • The LFN community issued a new white paper summarizing the history and capabilities of the 5G Super Blue Print, “Defining the 5G Super Blue Print - the Open Way,” now available for free download. 

    • The L3AF project, which brings complete lifecycle management of eBPF programs in the kernel, recently issued its second release, L3AF R2. The release introduces new improvements and  features to eBPF functionality, chaining, monitoring, and more.

    Open 3D Engine (O3DE)

    • Dive into the new First Person Interaction Toolkit for the Open 3D Engine (O3DE) with a walkthrough from award-winning game designer Steven Harmon.

    • Get an overview of O3DE’s Material Canvas, a node-based visual scripting editor that offers users a way of creating materials without needing to understand how to write a shader, in this demo from AWS’ Guthrie Adams.

    • Discover how students from the Rochester Institute of Technology are using O3DE to build a game, State of Matter, coming soon on Steam.

    • Learn how to create custom-made gems and components for the Open 3D Engine and modify gems so you can pass variables from the O3DE Editor to the component logic/code with this tutorial.

    Open Mainframe Project 

    • January is National Mentorship Month, so we asked Elizabeth Joseph, Open Mainframe Project Ambassador, mentor and Global Head of the Open Source Program Office for IBM, to share mentoring best practices she's learned over the years.     • Open Mainframe Project Platinum member Rocket Software created a series of tutorials that help users download and install Zowe, the integrated and extensible open source framework for z/OS that combines the past and present to build the future of mainframes.     Open Programmable Infrastructure (OPI) Project

    • What were the key accomplishments from the Open Programmable Infrastructure (OPI) Project last year? What are the goals for 2024? Learn more. 

    OpenJS Foundation

    • Version 3.0 of kepler.gl is now available. It brings new geospatial features to application users and dramatic improvements to developers using the libraries.

    • The security audit for nvm was completed successfully! OpenJS Foundation and 7ASecurity collaborated on the nvm security audit with the Open Source Technology Improvement Fund (OSTIF) as a result of the latest funding from the Sovereign Tech Fund.

    • Node.js v20.11.0 is out, the first release of 2024.

    OpenSSF

    • OpenSSF seeks to make it easier to sustainably secure the development, maintenance, and consumption of the open source software (OSS) we all depend on. Watch our new video explaining who we are and why you should join our efforts this year!

    • You are invited to submit a talk to the call for proposals for SOSS Community Day North America (formerly known as OpenSSF Day) which will be held on April 15th in Seattle before Open Source Summit North America.

    • OpenSSF Associate Members and General Members and the Community elected their representatives to the Governing Board and we elected a new and expanded Technical Advisory Council (TAC). Welcome to the newly elected representatives to the 2024 OpenSSF Governing Board and Technical Advisory Council (TAC)!

    • We recently announced the launch of SBOMit – a tool to add in-toto attestations to SBOMs (Software Bills of Material). The SBOMit specification is a SBOM-format independent method for attesting components with additional verification information. These attestations are generated at the time the supply chain was generated, and this verification information, which uses in-toto layouts, can be validated by a party to get a high degree of assurances about the software. 

    • In December, we convened the open source community in Tokyo, Japan to delve into discussions surrounding the challenges, overarching solutions, ongoing initiatives, and triumphs in fortifying the open source software (OSS) supply chain. Here’s a recap of what happened at OpenSSF Day Japan.

    • Last month, the OpenSSF responded to the Software Identification Ecosystem Option Analysis by the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA). Check out our full response.

    • OpenSSF Expands Support for AI Cyber Challenge (AIxCC) - a two-year competition with the ambitious goal of bringing together the best and brightest in AI and cybersecurity to defend software. We have deconstructed the AIxCC and encourage you to consider participating in this challenge.

    Overture Maps Foundation

    • Last week at CES 2024, Overture Maps attended an AMA session hosted by TomTom: “Diving into the future of mapmaking and location tech.” See what the future of mapmaking looks like.

    • At the State of the Map Conference, Executive Director Marc Prioleau presented Overture's vision for enhancing open map data. Join us in exploring how our collaboration with OpenStreetMap can meet the growing demand for detailed and reliable mapping information.

    • Last December, Overture Maps Foundation announced their update to their data release, now including the addition of the Google Open Buildings data set. The addition brought their total building footprint to 2.3B, up from 1.4 B. Read about it here.

    • Last December marked the first anniversary of the Overture Maps Foundation. It's been a year of steady progress and collaborative efforts in the world of open map data. We invite you to join our efforts. Become a part of this exciting venture. 

    • The newest release of Overture brings several enhancements to our dataset, focusing on both expanded coverage and improved data quality. Read the release notes.

    PyTorch Foundation

    • Understanding GPU Memory Series: Learn how to use Memory Snapshot, the Memory Profiler, and the Reference Cycle Detector to debug out of memory errors and improve memory usage. (Part 1 and Part 2)

    • Accelerate Generative AI using native PyTorch! We found 3x faster text-to-image diffusion models, all in pure PyTorch. No C++ needed.

    • Hugging Face shares how to finetune a 7B parameter model on a typical consumer GPU (NVIDIA T4 16GB) with LoRA and tools from the PyTorch and Hugging Face ecosystem.

    • The PyTorch team at Meta shares how to empower models with performance. Showcasing a more performant and user-friendly, bringing performance improvements to both model training and inference without manual efforts.

    • Learn how to host generative AI models on SageMaker MMEs using TorchServe and build a language-guided editing solution that helps content creators develop artwork faster.

    • Meta reports experiences in using PyTorch 2 to accelerate production models, resulting in up to ~25% training-time reduction.

    • Intel dives into how they use PyTorch for seismic imaging and collecting dinosaur bones.

    • PyTorch welcomes the latest ecosystem tool torchdistill! torchdistill is a coding-free ML OSS for reproducible deep learning knowledge distillation (KD) studies.

      • How I migrated my Artificial Nose to Zephyr… in hours! In this Tech Talk, Kate Stewart, Vice President of Dependable Embedded Systems at the Linux Foundation, puts Benjamin in the hot seat. He set out to build a device that would help him improve his bread-making skills during the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. The result was an Arduino-based “artificial nose” that used a gas sensor and machine learning (TinyML) to learn and detect scents (like the smell of perfectly fermented sourdough).
