Economic and Workforce Impacts of AI in Latin America

In the fourth installment of the Meta-sponsored series on open source AI, LF Research conducted a literature review on the value and impacts of AI across Latin America. Key findings include:
  • The region’s growing and impactful AI market: Latam shows strong AI investment through R&D, government schemes, and corporate partnerships, with companies reporting positive returns and increased efficiency & productivity due to AI adoption. 
  • Cultural readiness & optimism: these regions face challenges in the commercialization of AI, but show globally high levels of optimism, trust, and willingness to adopt.  
  • Workforce transformation: new job duties and roles are transforming the workforce, with increasing demand for candidates with AI-related skills.   
  • Sovereign innovation through open source: Open models provide an opportunity to kick-start innovation and adoption by lowering barriers to access and market entry and enabling countries to build AI infrastructure that reflects local culture, offering strategic control and independence.
The report concludes with a handful of recommendations and strategic directions.
